Durham VA Medical Center First VA Facility to Launch a CorPath Vascular Robotic Program
The Durham VA Health Care System recently announced the successful completion of the first robotic-assisted coronary angioplasty in the Department of Veterans Affairs. Durham’s Catheterization Laboratory Director, Dr. Rajesh Swaminathan, performed the procedure using the CorPath 200 System. “The adoption of the CorPath System truly emphasizes our continuous commitment to delivering state-of-the-art technology to Veterans,” said Dr. Sunil Rao, Durham’s Chief of Cardiology.
The use of robotic PCI, during a complex case of bifurcation stenting using the right radial approach and treated with BVS, is described by Dr. Paul Campbell in this comprehensive clinical case update, published by the Journal of Invasive Cardiology. The case demonstrates the benefits of robotic precision when positioning bioresorbable vascular scaffolds during complex PCI.

Few cardiologists take steps to avoid radiation exposure during pregnancy despite concerns
A recent issue of JACC included a survey of female cardiologists regarding radiation safety practices in the cath lab. Dr. Amy Sarma and the Women in Cardiology (WIC) section of the American College of Cardiology (ACC) report that 47% of female cardiologists have avoided being pregnant during periods when they would be exposed to radiation, but 57% have been exposed to radiation while pregnant. Furthermore, only 20% used fetal radiation badges and only 24% used additional lead when exposed to radiation during pregnancy. This data points to both the need for further education on the recommendations as well as awareness for solutions to occupational hazards in the cath lab.
